Software Engineer HPC (m/f/x)

As an Software Engineer HPC, you will use your know-how to further develop services in the field of high-performance computing for scientists at German universities and establish them nationally in a nationwide network of national high-performance computing centres. 

The positions are initially limited until 31.12.2025. A possible extension of the project until the end of 2030 has been envisaged.

Job description


  • Operation and optimization of the existing system infrastructure and support of the users of various German universities

  • Conceptual development of the system and service landscape

  • Long-term storage of research data and its user-friendly integration into a heterogeneous system landscape

  • Containerization of existing services

  • Provision of frameworks (TensorFlow, Caffe, PyTorch, etc.)

  • Evaluation of cross-site security aspects as well as the development of secure data exchange systems

  • Customer support of the users from the science


  • University degree in computer science, a technical discipline or natural sciences

  • First experience in operating HPC systems or Linux-based servers

  • Motivation to deal with complex concepts and techniques, to develop and to continuously educate yourself in these areas

  • Initiative, creativity and independence as well as the ability to work in a team 

  • Experience in interdisciplinary work

  • Very good written and spoken German and good English skills

We are looking forward to the following additional experiences:

  • Use and operation of container infrastructures (Podman, Singularity, Shifter, Kubernetes)

  • Maintenance of HPC software packages and their use in module systems ("moduleenvironment", lmod etc)

  • Knowledge of programming (C, C++, Java, Fortran...) and scripting languages (Python, Perl, bash)

  • Knowledge of server hardware and system architectures

  • Administration and management of computing clusters under Linux (e.g. deployment via xCAT)

  • Knowledge of parallel or highly available file systems (GPFS, Lustre, BeeGFS or Ceph, GlusterFS etc), storage systems in general, as well as the associated backup concepts

  • Operation of batch systems (SLURM, LSF, Moab, Torque-Maui, PBS, SGE etc.)

  • Administration of SQL-based databases (PostgreSQL, MariaDB etc - incl. basic knowledge of a SQL dialect) and web services in general

  • Knowledge of monitoring systems (e.g. Ganglia, Icinga, Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus, Kibana)

  • "Interconnect" or network technologies (e.g. Infiniband, Ethernet etc.)
