The job title of electrician has become increasingly obsolete in Germany since the training program was phased out in 2003. Regardless of the designation, however, the classic field of activity is still important for companies. Electricians install, maintain and repair electrical machines and systems as well as the electronic infrastructure of entire buildings. With the increasing IT complexity of modern electronics, they are also taking on more and more tasks from the specialist area of programming.
The successor to the training as an electrician is the training as an electronics technician for energy and building technology. It usually lasts three and a half years, but is not one hundred percent the same as its predecessor due to changes in content and examination. There, trainees learn the relevant basics, for example from the areas of electrical engineering, safety engineering, control engineering and IT. With enough relevant experience, lateral entry is also possible.
In addition to a generally good technical and, in particular, electronic understanding, mathematical knowledge for the calculation and design of complex plants and systems is important for the training and later work. Furthermore, electricians should have pronounced manual and coordinative skills in order to achieve the necessary precision in their work.
